About Shaquana
Shaquana lives in NYCHA’s Walt Whitman Houses in Fort Greene, where she is raising two teenagers.
She was born in Crown Heights and is a product of New York City public schools, including CUNY’s Kingsborough Community College and New York City College of Technology.
In recent years, Shaquana has worked at the Myrtle Avenue Revitalization Project as an engagement coordinator with NYCHA’s Ingersoll Houses, and with Brooklyn Movement Center as the food sovereignty organizer.
Shaquana’s Accomplishments
Introduced a broad range of candidates to voters in our district.

Spoke out about the problems with our election systems at both the local and national levels
Supported local activists who are creating a vital Democratic Party for our future
Worked collaboratively with local elected officials
Stood up to party leadership and held them accountable for excluding Democratic county committee members from secret party meetings
Shaquana’s Priorities
CIVIC ENGAGEMENT
When people have good information, they make good choices. Shaquana believes that her job as a representative of the party is to help voters understand how politics works, to introduce candidates to voters, and to share resources. From working with Fort Greene Clinton Hill Mutual Aid to sponsoring our assembly district’s first official party-organized committee of Democratic activists, trusting you is at the heart of Shaquana’s work.
BUILDING BRIDGES WITHIN THE BROOKLYN DEMOCRATIC PARTY
Brooklyn has the most Democrats—and among the most engaged activists—of any county in New York State, and yet the Brooklyn Democratic Party ignores our voices and cuts everyday voters out of decision-making processes. Shaquana works with a diverse network of other young District Leaders to imagine a party that listens to the people, and has started to build that future today.
YOUTH ENGAGEMENT
As a child of the foster care system, Shaquana knows firsthand how difficult it can be for young people to access the resources they need to thrive. Shaquana has dedicated her life to connecting youth to opportunities and showing them how civic engagement can help them advocate for themselves.
SOME OF SHAQUANA’S OTHER PRIORITIES INCLUDE
Improving the Board of Elections
Empowering NYCHA residents
Improving our parks
Expanding bicycle infrastructure
Shaquana’s Future
If Shaquana is re-elected, she commits to broadening and deepening the work she has already begun. Our assembly district deserves elected officials who collaborate with each other and prioritize the best interests of our neighbors, and avoid petty political in-fighting. With you by her side, she will continue to fight for an active Democratic Party and a healthy democracy here in our neighborhoods—and will continue to lead with her values both here at home and across the whole Borough of Brooklyn. #peoplepower!
